What is Shonishin?

Shonishin is a non invasive form of Acupuncture that that is used for complaints in infants and children. It involves the tapping and gentle touch of meridians to assist with harmonising the flow of qi within the body and thus helping to bring balance and ameliorate symptoms.

What ages are suitable for shonishin?

zero - six. However, older children and even adults can use Shonishin.

What symptoms and conditions are appropriate for Shonishin treatments?

  • lingering cough, asthma, bronchitis, phlegm

  • low immunity, post viral symptoms, bed wetting / night time urination

  • Digestive complaints: colic, constipation, diarrhoea, poor appetite, bloating, poor appetite

  • irritability, restlessness, poor sleep, anxiety/ fear, anger

How long does a Shonishin session take?

depending on age and presentation - between 15 and 30 minutes.

How many sessions will my child need?

This depends on the individual. A few treatments (3) in close frequency may be needed initially. Often we prescribe “homework” to parents to help also.

When is it not appropriate to have Shonishin?

  • if the child is febrile/ has a fever above 38 degrees celcius

  • broken bones and dislocations

  • acute abdominal pain

  • dehydration

Please note: Shonishin may be used alongside allopathic medicine. It is important to note that Shonishin doesn’t replace western allopathic medicine, such as in acute cases. Ask your healthcare provider or practitioner to see if this modality is appropriate.
